Why wasn’t Eric Bieniemy named Commanders head coach?

(UPDATE, 11:20 am, Feb. 1): ESPN is reporting that Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has been named Commanders head coach.)Deadspin | Eric Bieniemy passed by again; Zach Wilson's Aaron Rodgers delusion; Patrick Mahomes' dad-bod saga

Somehow the Carolina Panthers hired a head coach before the Washington Commanders. They did not get one of the hottest names on the market — some of those candidates stayed in their coordinator positions — but they did find someone to take the gig. After one season as an OC, Dave Canales is the new head coach of the Panthers. Best of luck to him as he deals with the trials and tribulations in his personal life, as well as the new ones coming his way as one of David Tepper’s employees. That leaves the Commanders as the only NFL team with no head coach, and they do not appear to be in a hurry to hire one. - Stephen Knox Read MoreDeadspin | Eric Bieniemy passed by again; Zach Wilson's Aaron Rodgers delusion; Patrick Mahomes' dad-bod saga

To the ‘Nikki Haley/America has never been racist’ crowd, I present you the Cardell Hayes case

It has been eight years since former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was killed in a road rage incident. Cardell Hayes was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison back in December 2016. However, the verdict was not unanimous. At the time, Louisiana was one of only two states — the other being Oregon —that allowed a 12-person jury to convict with one or two not-guilty votes. The jury voted 10-2 in Hayes’ case. - Stephen Knox Read More

It might sound crazy, but Russell Wilson returning to Denver might be the best option

Russell Wilson’s first two years in Denver were a rollercoaster ride, to say the least. Tumultuous might be a better word for Wilson’s time as a Bronco, but that doesn’t mean it should automatically come to an end just because of a few bumps in the road. His first season was bad, and while his second season improved on the field, it wasn’t an overall success because of perceived (or actual) friction between Wilson and Sean Payton. Still, another year together, learning from each other, and growing with the team, could be the best move. - Criss Partee Read More

Wait, did Zach Wilson think he and Aaron Rodgers were making a buddy movie together?

Well, here’s a shocking revelation: The Zach Wilson-Aaron Rodgers relationship reportedly soured as the 2023 season progressed in New York. Go figure. Apparently, Wilson thought he’d be able to stay in direct contact with Rodgers after Rodgers’ Achilles injury in Week 1. Obviously, that didn’t happen and Wilson, among others, grew tired of how head coach Robert Saleh “fawned over” A-Rod. This is according to reports from Zack Rosenblatt and Dianna Russini of The Athletic. - Criss Partee Read More

Six months from the season and Deion Sanders’ mouth is already writing checks his team can’t cash

Just because the invite list has been expanded, it doesn’t mean you’ll be receiving a Save-the-Date. And while the College Football Playoffs are increasing from four to 12 teams, Colorado’s chances of making it are as laughable as their performance was against Washington State. - Carron J. Micah Parson goes hard at Jerry Jones, Skip Bayless

Football season officially wrapped up a couple of weeks ago in the Dallas/Ft. Worth region of Texas after the Dallas Cowboys got embarrassed by the Green Bay Packers, 38-32. Outspoken All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons took some time to reflect on the loss and then came out from his slumber, firing shots at Dallas’ coaching staff and Jerry Jones’ “all-in” comments. - Criss Partee Read More

I rewatched the Nipplegate halftime show for the first time in 20 years and it was magnificent

You — yes, I am talking to you — are getting old. I might have pointed at my own face in the mirror and said that when Xwitter informed me that Thursday was the 20th anniversary of the infamous Nipplegate halftime show. - Stephen Knox Read More

It’s getting harder to classify Brock Purdy

Does anyone even know what type of quarterback Brock Purdy is? Is he the new Joe Flacco? Is he Big Ben redux? Tom Brady 2.0? He’s part-Kirk Cousins, but activates Russell Wilson when he scrambles out of the pocket. All these guys reached Super Bowls by their second season and they maintained those lofty standards. Maybe he’s on the Wilson arc. They were both drafted as seniors after the third round. - DJ Dunson Read More
